Meet Danú

In 1995 a group of young players from Waterford, Cork, Dublin, and Donegal travelled to Brittany to represent Ireland at the Lorient Inter-Celtic Festival. The chemistry was instant, the audience ecstatic, and the band that christened itself Danú never looked back. The result, writes the New York Times, ranges from “fierce fiddle reels to pensive ballads.” Strings Magazine calls their concerts “impressive, immersive and uniquely, unmistakably Irish,” while The Irish Times hails “a powerhouse band … a spirit-raising concoction.”

Danú released their debut album in 1997 to critical acclaim, and the ensemble has since released seven albums in two decades. Danú has performed worldwide, notably sharing their concert experience at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Symphony Space in New York City and countless festival stages across Europe and North America, with frequent broadcasts on RTÉ, BBC, NPR and CBC.

The ensemble has gone through many changes in members through the years. Current Danú members include founding member Benny McCarthy, accordion/melodeon; Nell Ní Chróinín, vocals/penny whistle; Éamon Doorley, bouzouki; Oisín McAuley, fiddle; Tony Byrne, guitar; Ivan Goff, flutes/uilleann pipe/penny whistle; and Billy Sutton, bodhran.
